Mrs. Booth- 8th Grade Language Arts Class
Welcome!
I am so glad that you are part of my class! I hope you enjoy your stay, become involved with many of our programs, and meet some new friends. I am working toward offering the educational experiences that will better prepare you for your future. We all need to work cooperatively for our program to be successful. Success is a team effort!
I grew up in Eastpointe and graduated from East Detroit High School. I earned my Bachelors of Elementary Education Degree from Wayne State and my Masters of Secondary Education from Saginaw Valley State University. This will be my fifteenth year teaching in East Detroit!!!
CLASS OUTLINE:
Language Arts includes spelling, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, communication and speaking skills. We will start the year with a review of test taking strategies and prep for the MEAP test.
After the MEAP will continue to practice reading and writing strategies. Students will read from a variety of materials including novels, short stories from the Literature Book, and supplemental readings. Students will use the writing process to practice writing skills.
Check out PowerSchool for assignments and grades.

Policies:
Homework policy- Homework is any work assigned as homework or any work not completed in class. Late assignments will be accepted until the end of the unit of study for partial credit. Homework will be assigned and due the following day so parents/guardians can look it over. It is the student’s responsibility to complete any work assigned when they’re absent. Absent work is accepted per school policy.
Grading scale- 100-90% A range, 89-80% B range, 79-70% C range, 69-60% D range, 59% and below F.
Discipline- We handle discipline within our classroom first, but if a child chooses to continue inappropriate behavior, parents/guardians will be contacted. They may eventually be sent to the office (Please review the discipline policy in your child’s planner.)
Planners- Students will use their planners at all times. Planners should be brought home each night. This is an effective way for parents to become actively involved and know what the students are learning. Planners should be treated with respect and kept in good condition. If a student loses or destroys the planner, it should be replaced within 2 days.
